Year 4 were very lucky to be able to have a look at a real, live honey bee hive, when Jason Arnold was kind enough to bring a mobile hive into school. Small groups of children were able to visit the hive, learn all about the honey bee life, how they make honey and they were also able to taste some local honey… yum!

The mobile hive had glass panels on each side, so we could all watch the bees moving around in the hive. We had to look really closely to see if we could spot the queen… she had a longer thorax and had a spot of white paint on her abdomen. We also spotted a couple of drones. These are much larger and they are the males.

It was fascinating to learn about these amazing insects… may be we could have our own hive in school one day and then harvest MDJS honey!!
