The summer seemed to disappear very quickly and before we knew it, we were back to school ready to start an exciting new term!
We had a few issues with getting our blog posts uploading through the strong protective proxys at school that were stopping us uploading images and some posts, but hopefully, it is all sorted now and we can get back to regular updates to showcase the WildLearning here at Michael Drayton!
You may have seen from our Website and Facebook pages that over the summer we got some VERY exciting news! We WON the Schools Category of the British Wildlife Photography Awards. WildlifeKate entered a portfolio of six images from the ones taken by Year 5 in Hartshill Hayes of the Bluebells. We took lots of fantastic shots but these 6 won the competition! We won a canon 1100 DSLR for school and a Raspberry Pi kit as well. WildlifeKate and Miss Compton traveled to London to pick up our prizes and they were awarded by Chris Packham. Chris Packham is a photographer and TV presenter, and does BBC Springwatch and Autumnwatch as well as lots of other wildlife programmes.

We also had great success with our first season of Grow Zone…. although it all grew a little too much over the summer holidays and some of the vegetables went a little ‘over’!! We have been harvesting lots of runner beans and HUGE courgettes that grew into marrows! The large white caterpillars attacked our cabbages though and next year we will have a net over them! Our animals are well and happy too! We now have 6 hens, 1 cockerel, 2 rabbits and 2 guinea pigs. They are all being very well cared for by our new Animal Care Mentors who applied for the job at the end of last term. We have lots of exciting things planned in WildLearning this term, so keep popping back to our blog to see what we are up to!
