This morning, WildlifeKate organised the building of a fire so that 4RR could experience cooking on an open fire. They had missed out when we did the Anglo Saxon fire building last term.
When 4RR came down to the outdoor classroom, the fire was already burning. We all talked about the dangers of fires and all the safety aspects that would make this experience great fun, but safe.
Today, we were cooking a simple bread, on a stick, over the glowing embers of the fire. First, we had to make the dough! This involved us mixing together flour and water in a cup. We all got rather messy but it was great fun!
When the dough was made, we wrapped foil around a stick and then pressed the dough around the stick so it was quite thin. This meant it would cook quick quickly.
Following all the safety instructions, we knelt down next to the fire and gently turned our dough over the heat. Gradually it began to turn brown and the dough started to cook. Some of us put it a bit close to the fire and it burnt a bit…. it all added to the flavour of our bread!
Once the dough was cooked, we peeled it off of the stick and spread some jam on it… it was delicious!!
