We have been working hard this week on getting our new ‘up-cycle’ Grow Zone area this week. This area has lots of materials that we have not had to pay for… things that would be thrown away or recycled.
We have built a number of pallet beds from the pallets that our school deliveries come in on. We broke up other pallets to create the edges and screwed in the sides. The Green team helped with this important job!!It was then just a matter of wheelbarrowing soil and spreading it out and packing it inside the pallet, ready for us to grow veg along the strips of soil within the pallets.
We are also going to use recycled old tyres to grow plants in too. They will be coming next week.
Laying a liner down on the soil, we then wheelbarrowed bark chipping on top to stop weeds growing. We have some more bark chippings coming later in the week to finish this off.
Mr Chadwick and Brian, from the local allotments built another bed at the back, next to the wall. We are going to grow lots of lovely beans up this super, warm and sunny wall.
Mr Chadwick is also going to help us make some planting areas out of old pieces of guttering!
WildlifeKate also discovered some old badminton nets that were going to be thrown away. These were ‘up-cycled’ to create a barrier on the fence to stop footballs etc going into the area.
We hope to finish the area next week, ready to start growing there…. so keep an eye out in the area… it is going to be fantastic!
