With the sun shining, Wildlife Club decided to head down to our Wild Learning Area to do a spot of pond dipping. Armed with some nets, trays and magnifiers, we looked to see what we could find. It was not long before we had some pond skaters, water boatmen and a few different beetle larvae. We also found some empty dragonfly nymph cases that had fallen into the pond.
WildlifeKate crept around to the lower pond so as not to disturb the wildlife and suddenly scooped with the net… she had caught us a female newt!!! We were all very excited as many of us had never seen a newt before. We had a look (and a feel!) when it was in the tray and then we placed it in the magnifying container so that we could all have a closer look before we returned it safely to the pond. We also found a number of young newts under our bug boards!
We finished off the session by looking at the amazing number of Bumble bees that have been visiting our courtyard area!
