The Rhubarb in the 3LA & 5WA Grow Zone Bed was looking good, so pupils from each class decided it was time to harvest it and cook it for the rest of the class to try.

First, the harvested the largest and pinkest stems and pulled off the leaves, placing them in the compost.

We took the stems inside and washed them thoroughly….

Next, using a sharp knife very carefully, we cut the rhubarb up into cubes.

We then placed the rhubarb in a saucepan and simmered it in a little water and some brown sugar until it was soft and juicy.

We then plated up a spoon of Rhubarb, a spoon of custard and a trifle sponge biscuit onto enough plates for our whole class and served it to them to taste!

Lots of children had never tried Rhubarb and there were quite a few who did not know what Rhubarb was! Most children had a taste and there were mixed reactions! Some loved it and cleared their plates in seconds…. others were not so sure!

May be next year, we will have some apples on our orchard trees and we could add the rhubarb to some apple pure t make an apple and rhubarb crumble!
