We have lots of pallets delivered to school as schools have lots of deliveries. Wherever possible, we keep the pallets and think of ways we can recycle them. Green Team decided they would like to make a shelter / den out of some. We drew up some ideas of how we might do this. We decided to join them together in a cube shape, with the front part open.
It was pouring with rain so we dragged our chosen pallets to the front entrance of the school, where there is a roof section and we could work outside without getting soaking wet! We looked at all the pallets and made sure that they were the same size. We then decided which bits we were going to screw together. WildlifeKate had brought her tool kit with her and she showed us how to safely use tools like the battery drill, the saw , screwdrivers and the spirit level.
We all were fascinated by the spirit level, as we had never seen one before and we spent a lot of time checking to see what was level and what was not!
We pre-drilled holes in the pallets, each of us taking a turn with the drill. We then swapped the bit on the end of the drill for a screwdriver bit and screwed the pallet parts together . We repeated this until we had screwed all the side together. Sometimes we had to saw some bits to get it to butt up snugly. Finally, we screwed a pallet on top for the roof.
Temporarily, we put some old sheets of tarpaulin over the top, but we care going to collect materials from the Hayes to cover it and make it more of a ‘natural’ den in the coming weeks.
It is looking really cool and we are really pleased with what we have created so far!! We will continue to work on it over the coming weeks.
