Year 3 are learning all about how people lived in Stone Age times. It is difficult to imagine what it is like to live in times where there were no shops or indeed, any of the things we are used to having nowadays.
Working with WildlifeKate, the teachers wanted to help pupils understand what it would have been like to have to search for their food and also how they might have made shelters as they travelled around, hunting.
At this time of year, there are not many items of food available in the Hayes to eat… most of the berries have been eaten by the wildlife. WildlifeKate, instead, decided she would put some food out for us to forage; food that might mimic the skills needed in stone age times!
Meeting in the Hayes, WildlifeKate explained the task…. to work as a small team to forage for as much food as we could. We would be looking for rice crispies (like small berries) and these would be worth 1 health point. The other items we were searching for were Shreddies (like small leaves or bark bits) and these would be worth 3 health points. We had to imagine that the food we found would be all we had to eat for that day, so it was essential that we found as much as possible. We would not really eat it though!!!
Starting to search, everyone soon realised that slow steps and a very sharp eye were needed to spot this food all around a large area of woodland. Before long we were definitely understanding the skills needed to forage effectively!
Time flew past and soon it was time to stop…. we looked in our pots and imagined how hungry we would be if this was all we had to eat and how hard it would be if we had to do that every day!!
Next it was onto shelter building. There are a number of shelters already started in the Hayes and WildlifeKate has been adding to one with lots of different groups of children. We had to search for different branches and ‘brush’ to build up the shelter and fill in all the gaps…
We were soon getting tired and appreciating what a tough life it must have been!!
We headed back to school to add up how many points we and all got on our Rice crispie and Shreddie count…. so maths work as well!
