Year 4 are learning all about water this term and we welcomed Malcolm Smith back from Severn Trent. He spent time in each of the Year 4 classes, teaching them all about how our water is cleaned and managed. He also ran two assemblies, helping us understand the importance of what we can and cannot flush down the toilet or put down our sinks.
We learnt that you can only flush the 3 ‘P’s down the toilet; POO, PEE, toilet PAPER. So many other things are flushed that should not be and they mean drains can become blocked.
These videos from the Severn Trent website help us understand about these issues. We should NEVER flush things like baby wipes, cotton buds, paper towels or nappies down the toilet.
We also learnt that FAT DEPOSITS are one of the biggest problems. We should never tip FAT down the plug , as it just coats the pipes and causes blockages.
The Eco-Crew met with Malcolm and talked about these issues. Malcolm gave them each a free Fat Trap that can be used in the kitchen.
The Eco-Crew then started to plan a poster that they will make next week.
You can even make your own fat trap…
A big ‘Thank you’ to Severn Trent for helping us learn about what we can do to help stop blocked drains.
