Green Team headed down to our ponds for a spot of pond dipping this week and we were not disappointed! The ponds are in their third year and they have really developed well and are brilliant for wildlife.
In just a few scoops of our nets, we captured lots of newts, several different kinds of dragonfly nymphs , pond skaters, tadpoles, snails and even some caddis fly larvae!
We were very excited to have captured so much life and spent time looking closely at them and learning about the different species.
We caught male and female smooth newts. The male was spectacular. He had a zigzagged tail and a bright yellow spotted under belly. The female was smoother and did not have the zig zag tail.
It was fantastic to be able to look at these animals close up, before we returned them safely to the pond.
