Outdoor Explorers explore a Graveyard and the Hayes

With a new group of Outdoor Explorers, we decided to head straight out before it got too dark! Very near to our school is a graveyard. Graveyards can be very good for wildlife as they are often very quiet and not disturbed much. We went to have a look! We saw a few birds in the trees around, but we were interested in all the different fungi that were popping up all around! We saw lots of different types; some were small, red and shiny… like little cherries appearing from the ground. Others were larger with convoluted edges… we saw lots of those. There were even some really tiny creamy coloured ones!

We then headed into the Hayes. We talked about all the leaves falling from the deciduous trees and why this happened. We also discovered that all the leaves would rot down and create goodness for the soil to help next year’s growth. WildlifeKate shook some of the trees and we had to see how many leaves we could catch before they hit the ground… it was quite hard!

It was not long before we had to head back to school. We had all enjoyed exploring these new areas.

Autumnal Collections

Green Teams and Outdoor Explorers’ Club both took advantage of the lovely Autumnal sunshine and headed out and about to look more closely at the gorgeous colours. Armed with a piece of card and a strip of double-sided tape, the pupils had to search for different colours in the leaves. Starting with the palest yellow they could find, they had to gradually get darker trying to create a rainbow of different shades and hues. They broke off tiny bits of leaf and stuck them onto the tape…..

The Outdoor Explorers took it one step further by going into the Hayes and using their strips to collect whatever caught their eye… interesting natural objects. …
